Knights Of Columbus - Father McGivney
In April 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut, to promote the Christian virtues of Unity and Fraternity among Catholic men, to provide Charitable security for their families in the event of death or disability, and to promote the civic virtue of Patriotism to combat the anti-Catholic bigotry which was prevalent at the time, especially against Catholic immigrants. You can read more about the history of the Knights and how our Order has grown nationally and internationally through the years at www.kofc.org.
Woodstock Council 776
In the winter of 1902-1903, several Catholic men gathered together to promote a Knights of Columbus Council in Woodstock, Illinois. A charter was granted and signed at the Woodstock National Guard Armory, founding Woodstock Council 776, the first Council in McHenry County. On May 5, 1903, the first Council Officers were elected.
The first regular meeting was May 18, 1903, at the Armory; the first official event for the full Council was the laying of the cornerstone of Saint Mary Church in 1909.
Over the last one hundred years, Woodstock Council 776 has kept Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism alive in Woodstock. These core beliefs and values continue to drive the good works of our Knights. If you are a practicing Catholic man at least 18 years old we want you to join us.
